Romelu Lukaku has moved to quash speculation about his future at Napoli, declaring his commitment to the club remains unwavering despite a challenging 2024-25 campaign marred by injuries and public tensions with the hierarchy. The Belgian striker dismissed media coverage of his rehabilitation period as "exaggerated" and clarified that his absence from the squad was driven solely by a desire to regain full fitness.
Speaking to La Dernière Heure, Lukaku addressed the controversy surrounding his decision to complete injury recovery in Belgium rather than at the club's training facility. "I was a bit irritated by the way some Italian media presented the thing," the 31-year-old explained. "They were exaggerated. I didn't come to Belgium on holiday; I wanted to return to being the best version of myself as quickly as possible." The striker emphasized that his relationship with Napoli remains intact, reinforcing his desire to succeed at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Conte Departure Won't Change Lukaku's Plans
The friction between Lukaku and the club reached its peak in March when manager Antonio Conte expressed disappointment that the striker had not communicated directly about his hamstring issues. Despite Conte's imminent departure from Naples—with speculation linking him to the Italy national team—Lukaku confirmed he will not follow his former mentor out the door. "I have one year left in my contract. I'm a Napoli player; I'm not the type of player who asks to leave," he stated categorically.
Lukaku has managed just five substitute appearances in Serie A this season, creating legitimate questions about his match readiness heading into the summer. However, Belgium has retained confidence in their record goalscorer, naming him in the squad for the upcoming World Cup. His inclusion represents significant faith from the national team despite not featuring for club or country since June 2024. Lukaku will face Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand in the group stage beginning June 15, offering him an immediate opportunity to regain rhythm on the international stage.
