Riise: Olise and Kvaratskhelia Would Be 'Unbelievable' for

John Arne Riise believes Michael Olise and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia would represent dream signings for Liverpool, yet the former Reds defender has expressed serious doubts about whether the club possesses the financial firepower to pursue such elite targets in the upcoming transfer window.

The Norwegian left-back, speaking exclusively to GOAL, pointed to Liverpool's lavish spending spree during the summer of 2025 as a key factor limiting future ambitions. With substantial funds already committed, Arne Slot's squad-building plans for next season may require a more pragmatic approach than the aggressive recruitment strategy witnessed twelve months earlier.

Navigating Major Departures

Liverpool face a significant overhaul this summer. Experienced full-back Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, the club's all-time leading scorer with 257 goals, are both departing Merseyside. Ibrahima Konate heads toward free agency, while midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, and Alexis Mac Allister have generated exit speculation. Goalkeeper Alisson's future also remains uncertain, leaving Slot with multiple positions to address.

The departure of Salah creates the most pressing concern. Finding a ready-made replacement for the four-time Golden Boot winner represents an enormous challenge, particularly given Liverpool's constrained budget. Riise suggested the club may need to either identify a stop-gap solution or develop internally rather than splash substantial funds on marquee additions like Bayern Munich's Olise or Paris Saint-Germain's Kvaratskhelia.

Building Through Youth and Incremental Progress

Despite the challenges, Riise highlighted a bright spot: teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha, who scored twice in senior football at just 17 years old. However, the ex-defender cautioned against expecting the youngster to immediately fill Salah's void. "He needs to stay at Liverpool and get a great pre-season," Riise explained, emphasizing that Ngumoha requires time and development before handling the demands of a regular starting role.

Riise's assessment reflects a shift toward incremental squad building rather than transformative summer transfers. While players like Olise and Kvaratskhelia would undoubtedly strengthen Liverpool's attacking options, financial constraints and the need to integrate existing signings suggest Slot must pursue a more measured recruitment strategy heading into 2026.
