DR Congo has defied United States health authorities by refusing to implement a mandatory 21-day isolation period before competing in the 2026 World Cup. Despite explicit warnings that the African nation could be barred from entry following an Ebola outbreak, Congolese football officials have announced their preparation schedule will proceed without modification.
Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force for the World Cup, issued the stern directive after a rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola spread across the Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak has triggered 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths, prompting the World Health Organization to raise the risk level to "very high." Giuliani told ESPN: "We've made it very clear to the Congo government that they need to maintain that bubble or they risk not being able to travel to the United States."
Squad Based Overseas, Officials Argue
Congolese federation representatives contend that the health risk is minimal because their entire playing squad and coaching staff, led by manager Sebastien Desabre, remain based in Europe. The team plans to honour scheduled friendlies against Denmark on June 3 in Liege and Chile on June 9 in Cadiz—matches that directly contradict the isolation requirement. A federation official stated: "We have kept our training programme. No player in the squad has come from DR Congo."
The only concession made was cancellation of a celebratory trip to Kinshasa, their capital. This marks a significant compromise, as the 2026 World Cup represents Congo's first appearance in the tournament since 1974—52 years ago. Several team officials had recently travelled from the DRC to the Belgian training base, though the squad itself avoided outbreak hotspots.
Tournament Schedule at Risk
Congo are drawn in Group K and scheduled to be based in Houston during the tournament. Their opening fixture pits them against Portugal on June 17, followed by matches against Colombia in Guadalajara and Uzbekistan in Atlanta. If the United States enforces its threat to deny entry, the tournament's fixture list could face chaotic rescheduling mere weeks before kickoff, creating unprecedented logistical complications.
