Manchester United are on the verge of completing a transformative midfield overhaul, with reports indicating that a £116 million double swoop for Ederson and Mateus Fernandes is within touching distance. The Red Devils have accelerated their summer recruitment strategy after missing out on Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson to Manchester City, pivoting instead towards the Atalanta and West Ham targets.
According to multiple sources, the deal for Brazilian playmaker Ederson is effectively sealed. Atalanta have accepted Manchester United's offer of an initial €48 million plus €5 million in performance-related bonuses, totalling €53 million (£46 million). The Serie A side have cleared the way for Ederson's departure, with head coach Raffaele Palladino confirming the midfielder's absence from Atalanta's final match against Fiorentina was a deliberate choice. "The fact that a player like him is being followed by such an important club should be a source of pride," Palladino remarked, signalling the club's acceptance of the transfer. Ederson has reportedly given his personal approval to the move and is ready to complete formalities at Old Trafford.
Fernandes Priority Move
The second pillar of United's midfield reconstruction centres on West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder who has emerged as a priority target. Fernandes has identified Old Trafford as his dream destination, inspired by the presence of fellow countryman and club captain Bruno Fernandes. West Ham are expected to demand £70–80 million should they retain their Premier League status, but United have already held fresh negotiations and positioned themselves as frontrunners ahead of rival suitors including Arsenal.
INEOS leadership had pursued Elliot Anderson extensively, but Manchester City's dominance in that pursuit forced a strategic recalibration. The Manchester club's midfield requirements stem from the departure of Casemiro and plans to move Manuel Ugarte on, leaving a substantial void in Michael Carrick's engine room. Landing both Ederson and Fernandes would inject creativity and athleticism into United's midfield for seasons to come. The club's next move will determine whether they can finalise Fernandes' transfer and officially announce Ederson before pre-season preparations accelerate.
