Ronald Koeman has expressed serious concerns over Jurrien Timber's availability for the upcoming World Cup, revealing the Arsenal defender faces an uncertain battle to overcome a persistent groin injury that has sidelined him since mid-March. The Netherlands coach painted a bleak picture of the left-back's recovery prospects during an interview with Dutch television, dampening hopes that the 22-year-old could feature in the tournament.
"Jurrien has been dealing with this for quite some time. It has been a rollercoaster ride," Koeman told reporters. "He is training again to see if he can make the Champions League final and be available for the World Cup, but it does not look rosy at the moment." The injury timeline has proven frustrating for both club and country, with Timber's absence felt acutely in Arsenal's defensive setup during a crucial period of the season.
Depay Expected to Return in Time
On a more positive note, Koeman expressed optimism regarding Memphis Depay's fitness. The Netherlands' record scorer with 55 international goals has been recovering from a thigh injury sustained in late March while playing for Brazilian club Corinthians. "He still has three matches with Corinthians before we get together as the Dutch national team," Koeman explained. "He really needs to get minutes in those matches. I assume that will happen, and if everything goes well, he might even play 90 minutes in the final match."
The 32-year-old striker will have approximately two weeks of preparation time following his final Corinthians appearance before the Netherlands' opening World Cup fixture against Japan in Group F, which also features Sweden and Tunisia.
Mounting Injury Concerns for the Dutch
The Dutch squad faces additional complications with three players already ruled out through injury:
- Defender Matthijs de Ligt
- Midfielder Jerdy Schouten
- Forward Xavi Simons
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has previously acknowledged Timber's importance to the Gunners, noting the player's leadership qualities and determination to contribute despite his injury struggles. As recovery progresses, both club and country will monitor the left-back's condition closely, with the Champions League final potentially serving as a benchmark for his fitness levels before World Cup selection decisions are finalized.
