Wayne Rooney has delivered a scathing assessment of Chelsea's recent transfer strategy, describing the signings of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens as "very strange" on his BBC podcast. The Manchester United legend expressed particular frustration at the club's decision to sell Noni Madueke to Arsenal while recruiting replacements who have failed to deliver consistent performances.
Rooney's criticism centres on the lopsided nature of Chelsea's squad building under Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali's ownership. The exchange of wingers between the two London rivals has proven disastrous for the Blues, with Madueke flourishing at the Emirates as a key contributor to Arsenal's title challenge and Champions League final run. Meanwhile, Gittens has managed just one goal in 27 appearances since arriving for £52 million, failing to justify his recruitment as Madueke's replacement. Garnacho presents a similar picture of underperformance, with the Argentine international scoring once in the Premier League after his £40 million move from Old Trafford. The winger has struggled to adapt to Chelsea's system and replicate the form that made him a prospect at Manchester United.
Rebuilding Strategy and Summer Targets
Rooney believes Chelsea must conduct a significant clear-out to restore balance to their bloated squad. He argued the club should prioritise recruiting experienced leaders to support their young talents rather than accumulating more developmental talent. "There's players there they need to get rid of to get some more experience in and help the young players," he stated, highlighting a fundamental flaw in the club's recruitment philosophy over recent transfer windows.
However, Rooney expressed optimism following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager, noting the significance of the Spanish coach receiving a four-year deal with the formal title of manager rather than head coach. Rooney believes that if Alonso is granted sufficient authority and investment to pursue proven talent in summer 2025, Chelsea possesses the capability to challenge for the Premier League title. "They've got some very talented players so if they get the signings right in the summer I actually think they could be up there challenging for the title," Rooney concluded, indicating that managerial clarity could unlock Chelsea's potential if paired with disciplined recruitment.
