Ferdinand Backs Carrick But Eyes Luis Enrique for Manchester

Rio Ferdinand has endorsed Michael Carrick as Manchester United's permanent manager while simultaneously naming Luis Enrique as his dream appointment. The former England defender's comments come as INEOS prepares formal discussions with Carrick over the role following his interim success since January 2026.

Ferdinand acknowledged Carrick's achievements this season, crediting the interim boss with securing the club's place in the Premier League top five and Champions League qualification. Yet the pundit made clear that if PSG's manager became available, it would change everything. "Given what he has done and the lack of options around, he would be my first choice," Ferdinand explained on talkSPORT. "The only person I would seriously look at is Luis Enrique."

Why Ferdinand Rates Enrique Above Carrick

The Barcelona legend currently leads Paris Saint-Germain to unprecedented success on the European stage. Enrique guided PSG to Champions League glory last season and the French giants have already secured Ligue 1 this campaign while preparing for another continental final against Arsenal. His credentials were further validated when he won the Best FIFA Men's Coach Award in 2025, cementing his status among football's elite tacticians.

Ferdinand's position was unambiguous: "If he came up for grabs, he is the manager of the current Champions League team, the team in there to win it back-to-back titles and the best team on the planet. He is a great manager. If he is available, I don't care what Michael Carrick has done, you take him because of what he has achieved." The distinction highlights how elite European pedigree and proven success in the Champions League represent a different tier in modern football management.

Carrick's Interim Credentials

Manchester United's current caretaker has made a compelling case for the permanent position. Since taking over following Ruben Amorim's departure, Carrick has stabilized the club and delivered tangible results. However, Ferdinand's remarks suggest that while Carrick merits serious consideration given the limited pool of world-class alternatives, the arrival of a manager with Enrique's trophy cabinet and European pedigree would be irresistible.

With INEOS set to begin formal negotiations with Carrick imminently, the real question remains whether elite managers of Enrique's caliber would consider a Manchester United move, or if Carrick represents the most realistic path forward for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
