Dortmund Eye Werder Bremen Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus as Kobel

Borussia Dortmund have made contact with SV Werder Bremen regarding a potential move for 22-year-old goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, according to reports from Deichstube. The Bundesliga club is exploring options to strengthen their goalkeeping department, though the exact seriousness of their interest remains unclear at this stage.

Backhaus has emerged as one of Germany's most promising young shot-stoppers and has cemented himself as Bremen's primary goalkeeper this season. Across all competitions, the 22-year-old has recorded 31 appearances, conceding 54 goals while maintaining five clean sheets. His consistent performances have made him a target for several Bundesliga clubs looking to invest in future talent.

Dortmund's Goalkeeping Landscape

At Signal Iduna Park, Gregor Kobel remains the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper with no immediate threat to his position. Should Backhaus join the club, he would initially serve as a promising understudy with long-term potential to challenge for the number one role. Dortmund currently have three goalkeepers on their books beyond Kobel: backup Alexander Meyer, now 35 years old, and Diant Ramaj, who is set to return from his loan spell at 1. FC Heidenheim this summer. Speculation suggests Ramaj could leave the club permanently in the coming transfer window.

The pursuit of Backhaus would not go unopposed. SC Freiburg are also monitoring the Bremen goalkeeper as potential insurance should Noah Atubolu depart during the transfer window. Backhaus remains contracted to the Green-Whites until 30 June 2028, giving Bremen considerable leverage in any negotiations with interested parties.

This potential move reflects Dortmund's strategy of developing young talent through strategic recruitment, even when filling rotational positions. The coming weeks will reveal whether this initial inquiry develops into a formal bid or remains merely exploratory.
