Moggi Criticises Juventus Strikers, Defends Koopmeiners Potential

Luciano Moggi, the former Juventus general manager, has launched a scathing assessment of the club's attacking options while offering a nuanced defence of midfielder Teun Koopmeiners in an interview on Radio Radio.

Moggi's comments reveal deep concerns about Juventus's forward line. He was particularly critical of Serena Woltemade, questioning whether the striker can deliver the impact the Bianconeri need. "He's too tall, and despite his height he doesn't head the ball well," Moggi said, dismissing comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The former executive suggested Woltemade lacks the decisiveness required to transform Juventus's fortunes, noting that even his involvement in their first goal came through providing a through ball rather than finishing chances himself.

Koopmeiners Needs Freedom, Not Instructions

On Koopmeiners, Moggi offered a different perspective—one rooted in tactical philosophy. Drawing on conversations with Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who previously coached the Dutch midfielder, Moggi explained a crucial insight into how Koopmeiners performs best. According to Moggi, the playmaker should be deployed without rigid positional constraints. "Koopmeiners should not be given a role. He should be put on the pitch and left to find his position himself," Moggi stated. "If you give him a role, you confuse him and he practically disappears."

This assessment addresses what many observers have noted about Koopmeiners's integration into Juventus's system. The midfielder, who joined from Atalanta during the 2024 summer transfer window, has appeared hesitant in possession at times. Moggi attributed this caution to a loss of confidence rather than technical deficiency. "I think that, right now, Koopmeiners is afraid of receiving the ball for fear of making a mistake," he explained, suggesting the issue is psychological rather than fundamental to his ability.

Moggi's dual critique and endorsement highlights the internal debate at Juventus about squad construction and tactical deployment. While he dismissed the club's current strikers as insufficient for a title challenge, he suggested that unlocking Koopmeiners's creativity requires a different approach—one that prioritises creative freedom over structured positioning. Whether Juventus's coaching staff adopts this perspective could prove decisive in whether Koopmeiners becomes the transformative player the club hoped to sign or remains an expensive underperformer in Serie A.
