Gianluigi Buffon has expressed keen interest in watching Nick Woltemade make his potential debut for Juventus on Sunday evening against Milan in a high-stakes Serie A clash. The legendary goalkeeper believes the German forward's physical attributes combined with technical quality could prove transformative for the Bianconeri's attack this season.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Buffon outlined what intrigues him most about Woltemade's arrival from Newcastle United. "I am curious about Woltemade," he said. "I want to see whether his physique, his 198 centimetres, combined with outstanding technique, will be as dominant as I expect." The former Italy international drew comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the towering Swedish striker who terrorised Serie A defenders during his time at the club. "I would say yes. Woltemade can be a real asset," Buffon continued, suggesting the 24-year-old possesses similar potential to reshape Juventus' forward play.
Transfer Window Assessment
Juventus secured Woltemade on loan for the remainder of the season, paying approximately €5 million without any obligation or option to purchase. The move reunites the forward with Serie A after his €75 million transfer to Newcastle last summer proved underwhelming in the Premier League. Not everyone shares Buffon's optimism, however. Gianluca Zambrotta, his fellow World Cup winner from 2006, expressed reservations about Juventus' attacking options. Zambrotta pointed to Woltemade and Randal Kolo Muani having scored just five goals combined so far in 2026, raising questions about whether they provide sufficient firepower for Italy's record champions. The former defender suggested he would have prioritised retaining Dusan Vlahovic, the Serbian striker who departed on a free transfer to Besiktas after contract negotiations stalled.
