Abdellah Ouazane emerged from the bench during Ajax's 1-1 draw with NEC on Saturday, but the 17-year-old academy prospect made enough of an impression to spark debate among experienced Dutch football analysts. Despite spending just 30 minutes on the pitch, the talented winger showcased glimpses of his potential that left observers questioning why he remains sidelined.
On ESPN's De Eretribune show, veteran pundit Mario Been expressed frustration with the cautious approach taken by Ajax coach Míchel Sánchez. "You spend the whole match watching those expensive, big names who have been signed, but a boy like that from the club's own youth set-up has, in my view, far more quality than most of those they have brought in," Been said. The former manager emphasized Ouazane's rare ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations—a quality increasingly valuable in modern football's pressing systems.
Questions Over Squad Selection Strategy
Alongside Been, pundit Kees Kwakman voiced similar concerns about Ajax's handling of their academy talent. "I'm a big fan of Ouazane, but they are being so cautious with him there," Kwakman remarked in disbelief. The debate highlighted broader concerns about how the club deploys young players from its renowned academy, particularly when established signings have yet to justify their investment.
Ajax's recruitment strategy has attracted scrutiny this season. While the club continues to invest in experienced players, homegrown talents like Ouazane struggle for consistent playing time. The winger's technical ability and dribbling prowess suggest he could offer an alternative solution, especially with injuries affecting other positions. With Berghuis sidelined and the right wing remaining unsettled, opportunities may soon present themselves for the academy graduate to prove his worth at senior level.
Ouazane's development trajectory will be closely monitored as Ajax navigate the remainder of the campaign. Whether Sánchez grants him more substantial opportunities could determine both the teenager's future and the club's tactical flexibility in crucial matches ahead.
