Real Madrid endured a torrid afternoon at the Santiago Bernabéu, with home supporters voicing their frustration as the side limped to a goalless draw against Villarreal in La Liga's eighth round on Saturday. The performance proved so uninspiring that fans jeered the players off the pitch at half-time, reflecting the mounting pressure on José Mourinho's squad.
The first 45 minutes painted a picture of creative bankruptcy from the home side. Madrid mustered just five attempts on goal, with only one troubling the woodwork, while registering a mere 17 touches inside Villarreal's penalty area. Possession hovered just above 52%, hardly the dominance expected from a club of Madrid's stature. The Yellow Submarine's compact defending, combined with Madrid's blunt attacking approach, rendered the opening period utterly forgettable for those packed into the stadium.
Defensive Struggles Continue
This disappointing result compounds Madrid's recent woes in La Liga. The merengues had entered Saturday's fixture nursing two defeats already this season—a 1-0 loss at Real Betis and a 2-1 reverse against Atlético Madrid just days earlier on 20 September. The defensive fragility displayed in Madrid derbies has proved costly, yet the lack of attacking thrust against Villarreal suggested deeper problems in Mourinho's tactical setup.
In a curious selection decision, Mourinho benched Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior, one of Madrid's most dangerous attacking threats. The absence of the pacey left-winger left the side looking laboured and predictable, unable to generate the width and creativity needed to break down a well-organized visitor defence. Without Vinícius' threat, Madrid lacked the spark required to unlock stubborn opposition.
The Bernabéu's chorus of disapproval signals growing discontent as Madrid sit outside the title race early in the campaign. With Champions League commitments looming and La Liga pressure mounting, Mourinho faces urgent questions about his team's attacking structure and personnel deployment heading into the next round of fixtures.
