The winger's wayward effort in the 30th minute, when the score remained level at 1-1, proved a turning point in a match that ultimately slipped away from the home side.
Van der Gijp's frustration was evident during his appearance on Vandaag Inside, where he dissected the moment Berghuis fired wide from close range. "What disappointed me so much is that Berghuis didn't put that ball away. That disappoints me. With such a good strike with his left foot," Van der Gijp explained. The veteran analyst highlighted the quality of the opportunity, drawing a stark comparison to Berghuis's penalty-taking ability. "I think if he takes 20 penalties, he scores all 20. And this one you put wide, man. Come on, man!" His candid assessment underscored how uncharacteristic the miss was for an experienced forward of Berghuis's calibre.
Tactical Errors Cost Ajax Dear
Beyond individual mistakes, fellow panellist Valentijn Driessen directed his criticism at Ajax manager Míchel, questioning several substitution decisions that may have contributed to the defeat. Driessen questioned why Abdellah Ouazane, described as Ajax's standout performer, was left out of the starting lineup against PSV. The tactical approach deteriorated further when Tolu Arokodare was withdrawn after just 60 minutes despite playing competently, followed by the introduction of unused strikers Kasper Dolberg and Marcos Leonardo.
Defensive setup also drew scrutiny. Driessen highlighted the puzzling decision to deploy Gaaei at right-back against PSV's dangerous Van Bommel, when Ajax had alternative defensive options available on the bench. Lutsharel Geertruida's two-goal contribution for PSV, including a wonderfully-executed finish, proved decisive in securing the visitors' 3-1 victory. The result leaves Ajax facing mounting pressure in their Eredivisie title race as the season progresses.
