Benzema Stuck in Saudi Arabia Despite Al-Hilal Exit, Lyon

Karim Benzema remains trapped in Saudi Arabia despite mutually terminating his contract with Al-Hilal just seven months into his stint. A Spanish newspaper report reveals that the French striker's departure from the Saudi Pro League club does not grant him freedom to join his preferred destination, Olympique Lyon.

According to Marca, Benzema's contractual obligations to the Saudi Pro League until 2030 blocked a summer return to his boyhood club. Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean confirmed the failed negotiations: "It is true that there was contact with Benzema through an intermediary this summer, but the matter was impossible because his contractual situation prevented it. Karim is an exceptional player, and we were looking for a striker, but we could not complete anything."

Al-Hilal's Squad Overhaul Creates Impasse

The root cause stems from Al-Hilal's aggressive recruitment strategy. The Saudi club invested over 200 million to strengthen their squad, signing marquee talents across multiple positions. New arrivals included defenders Theo Hernandez and Kalidou Koulibaly, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, and midfielders Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ruben Neves. This influx of talent left the club's management unable to register Benzema in the domestic league, restricting the forward to AFC Champions League competition only.

Facing limited playing time in the Saudi domestic competition, both player and club agreed to an early termination, despite Benzema publicly insisting on 21 August that he would remain. His departure opened possibilities with rival Saudi clubs Al-Shabab and Al-Ittihad, yet none materialized into concrete moves.

Future Remains Uncertain

Benzema now exists in contractual limbo—unemployed but contractually bound to Saudi football through 2030. Lyon remains his preferred destination for a return to European football, though his binding Saudi obligations complicate any transfer. The coming weeks will determine whether he resolves his situation by joining another Saudi club, negotiating a release, or retiring from professional football after a storied career spanning multiple European elite clubs.
