Pochettino: Noahkai Banks Not Considered for USMNT Camp Amid

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Noahkai Banks will not receive a call-up for the United States Men's National Team's upcoming international camp as the Augsburg defender continues to deliberate over his international allegiance. The 19-year-old dual national remains undecided between representing the USMNT or switching to Germany, a decision that has effectively sidelined him from consideration for now.

Banks initially represented the United States across youth levels, earning caps for the U-17, U-19, and U-20 squads before receiving his first senior call-up in September. He did not feature in subsequent matches against South Korea and Japan, and his involvement with the program halted after that campaign. In March, facing mounting interest from Germany's national team setup, the center back withdrew from consideration for the international break to evaluate which federation best aligned with his career trajectory.

Dual National Status Complicates Decision

Should Banks opt for Germany, he would need to file a one-time switch through FIFA regulations, formally ending his eligibility for USMNT selection. Speaking to Kicker about his process, the defender revealed a measured approach to the decision. "I watched the World Cup with mixed feelings and was happy for the guys because they all made me feel so welcome back then," Banks explained. "Every now and then I told myself it would be cool to be there, but I didn't dwell on it. I made my decision with the future in mind, and it's the right one." Notably, no final determination has been publicly announced, leaving his international future in limbo.

Pochettino acknowledged the ongoing dialogue with potential dual nationals, emphasizing the USMNT's commitment to maintaining relationships even when players remain uncommitted. "We are in contact with all the potential dual nationals," the USMNT boss said. "It's important for us to see, because it's a connection and the human connection that is so important, even if they, like in the case of Noki, didn't change his mind and is waiting. Still no decision and of course we cannot consider him for the next camp."

Augsburg Form Strengthens Banks' Profile

Despite his international uncertainty, Banks has established himself as a reliable defensive presence in the Bundesliga. During the 2025-26 season, he made 23 league appearances for Augsburg, though late-season minutes became sporadic. He has since reclaimed his starting position, featuring in all three competitive matches at the start of the current campaign—two Bundesliga victories and a DFB-Pokal win—conceding just one goal across those contests. His defensive solidity has caught attention as Augsburg prepare for a heavyweight clash against Bayer Leverkusen this weekend, which will feature fellow USMNT international Malik Tillman. Pochettino's USMNT will reconvene for an international window featuring fixtures against Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada, though Banks' absence from that roster appears certain until he resolves his international status.
