Michael Carrick has firmly pushed back against criticism of Manchester United's summer transfer business, declaring the club maximised its budget to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. The United manager oversaw spending of approximately £150 million across three midfield signings—Andre Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba—a strategy he believes demonstrates shrewd recruitment rather than financial constraint.
Speaking at a Friday press conference, Carrick highlighted the distinction between United's approach and rival clubs. While Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Liverpool each invested over £100 million on individual players, Carrick argued his club adopted a more balanced method. "We went into the transfer window with the desire to come out with a stronger squad than the one we had last season, and we have already added strength to the group," he stated. "I think we have done a very good job in that respect."
Balancing Squad Depth Over Blockbuster Deals
The manager credited chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox for maximising available funds within financial constraints. Carrick stressed that without access to the unlimited resources of competitors, United's portfolio approach to recruitment proved effective. "Looking at what we spent, I think we made the most of what was possible without any doubt," he emphasised.
Not all supporters agreed with the strategy. Fan frustration centred on United's failure to secure a specialist left-back, with a proposed move for Rayan Ait-Nouri collapsing before Tuesday's deadline. The club now depends on Luke Shaw as the sole recognised left-back option for the opening weeks of the campaign. Carrick acknowledged the gap but rejected the notion of perfectionism. "Some options become available and others do not, and that is part of developing the group and continually trying to progress," he said.
Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee remained a source of intrigue after Everton made late inquiries on deadline day. The 25-year-old has yet to feature this season, but Carrick expressed confidence in his role. "Zirkzee is an important player. Joshua is happy here, and my relationship with him is very good," the manager assured. With the window closed, attention shifts to whether United's midfield reinforcements and squad depth prove sufficient to mount a serious title challenge in the Premier League.
