Gio Reyna Scores First Bundesliga Goal in Monchengladbach

Gio Reyna netted his first goal of the Bundesliga season as Borussia Monchengladbach fell 3-1 to Augsburg on Sunday, with the American midfielder coming off the bench to provide a late consolation. The strike comes at a critical juncture, weeks before Mauricio Pochettino announces his USMNT squad for the summer tournament, where Reyna remains in contention despite limited playing time at club level.

Introduced in the 58th minute with Monchengladbach trailing 2-0, Reyna made an immediate impact during his 33 minutes on the pitch. In the 90th minute, Rocco Reitz played a pinpoint pass after collecting a loose ball, and Reyna finished clinically into the far corner to deny Augsburg a clean sheet. The goal marked Reyna's first at club level since January 2025, when he was still at Borussia Dortmund. His late finish showcased precisely the kind of attacking threat that convinced Monchengladbach to recruit him this summer.

Playing Time Crunch Amid International Ambitions

The 23-year-old transferred to Monchengladbach seeking regular minutes after slipping down the pecking order at Dortmund, yet the move has not delivered the expected pathway. Reyna has accumulated just 487 minutes across 18 Bundesliga matches this season, starting only four times. His return to the pitch on Sunday evening highlighted the disparity between his national team form and club opportunities.

For the USMNT, Reyna demonstrated his value in autumn qualifying matches, scoring against Paraguay and assisting versus Uruguay. However, he saw minimal action during March friendlies against Portugal and Belgium, appearing for just 31 minutes. This inconsistency at both club and international level has placed him on the bubble for summer selection, where competition for midfielder slots remains fierce.

Joe Scally, another American in Monchengladbach's ranks, completed all 90 minutes and received a yellow card. Augsburg's Noahkai Banks remained unused on the bench. With one league match remaining on May 16 against Hoffenheim, Monchengladbach occupy 11th place and can offer no further cup opportunities to boost Reyna's minutes before the international campaign begins.
