Vinicius Junior Almost Joined Barcelona Before Real Madrid

Vinicius Junior came remarkably close to signing for Barcelona before his record-breaking move to Real Madrid, according to former Blaugrana president Josep Maria Bartomeu. The Brazilian winger's trajectory could have been entirely different had the Catalan club matched Madrid's financial offer when he was emerging as one of world football's most promising young talents.

Bartomeu revealed that Barcelona held preliminary negotiations with Vinicius and his representatives while the left-winger was still competing in Brazil's top flight. The club viewed him as a generational prospect and advanced talks significantly with his family and agents. However, Real Madrid's superior package ultimately proved decisive. Madrid completed the initial transfer agreement with Flamengo in May 2017, with the deal becoming official once Vinicius turned 18 in July 2018.

How Madrid Won the Race

"Vinicius Jr was of interest to us," Bartomeu told ESPN Deportes. "We spoke with his family, with his agents, and there was indeed an initial agreement. Madrid possibly made a better offer than Barca and took Vinicius." The admission underscores Barcelona's inability to compete financially with Madrid during that transfer window, a pattern that would haunt the club's recruitment strategy throughout the late 2010s.

Vinicius has vindicated Madrid's investment spectacularly. Over eight seasons with the Spanish giants' first team, he has accumulated 127 goals and 100 assists across 372 appearances in all competitions. His performances in La Liga and European competition have been central to Madrid's recent dominance. Most memorably, he scored the decisive goal in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool, establishing himself as a clutch performer on the sport's biggest stages.

Barcelona's Missed Opportunity

The failed pursuit represents one of Barcelona's significant recruitment mistakes during Bartomeu's presidency. A player of Vinicius's calibre—combining explosive pace, technical skill, and consistency—would have transformed the club's attacking threat over the past half-decade. Instead, Madrid has benefited from one of football's most complete attacking wingers during their period of sustained success.

Barcelona now face Madrid this weekend at Camp Nou in La Liga, where Hansi Flick's side sit 11 points clear at the summit with four matches remaining. The clash offers a direct reminder of how recruitment decisions shape competitive trajectories in elite football.
