Leeds United have positioned themselves as frontrunners to land Juventus striker Lois Openda this summer, with manager Daniel Farke eyeing the Belgian forward to strengthen his attacking ranks ahead of the new season. The Championship promotion contenders are prepared to table a substantial financial package, including significant wages, to bring the 26-year-old to Elland Road.
Openda's time in Turin has proven disappointing. The former RB Leipzig forward has managed just two goals in 37 appearances for the Italian giants, a stark contrast to his prolific spell in the Bundesliga where he scored 41 goals and provided 14 assists across 90 matches. Juventus activated a permanent transfer clause to complete his signing from Leipzig last summer, but the club has already begun exploring exit strategies after his failure to adapt to Serie A's tactical demands.
Leeds' Transfer Strategy
The Whites view loan-to-buy as their preferred pathway, allowing them to manage financial risk while assessing the forward's form in English football. Leeds believe Openda's versatility and movement patterns will flourish in the Premier League's more expansive style of play, a contrast to the defensive rigours he struggled with in Italy. Coventry City have also expressed interest, but Leeds hold a commanding advantage in negotiations.
Juventus seek to recoup their £35 million investment, yet Leeds are resisting that valuation. The Yorkshire club intends to negotiate a reduced purchase option and defer the final fee, spreading capital across multiple signings for their push toward top-flight football. Openda would partner Dominic Calvert-Lewin in attack, providing elite goalscoring support as the club targets sustained promotion credentials.
