Jens Wissing Explains Why He Joined Al-Ittihad as New Head

Jens Wissing has outlined the reasons behind his decision to take over as Al-Ittihad's head coach, following his appointment as successor to Sergio Conceicao. The German tactician marked his competitive debut with the Saudi Pro League side by securing a 3-2 victory over South Africa's Orlando Pirates during a pre-season friendly in Marbella.

Speaking exclusively to the club's YouTube channel after the match, Wissing emphasized the welcoming environment and organizational support that drew him to the project. "It was easy to join because we received a lot of support and help from everyone around the team," he explained. "We feel very good about being with this group. I sense very positive energy, and the past two weeks have gone extremely well." The 51-year-old German manager signed a two-season contract extending through 2028, tasked with rebuilding after a trophyless campaign under his predecessor.

Early Impressions and Training Progress

Wissing highlighted the rapid development he has observed during the pre-season phase. "We have already conducted many excellent training sessions, and the players are improving significantly," he stated. "I can already see a substantial step forward in their application and understanding." The coach stressed that while the Orlando Pirates victory offered valuable momentum, there remains work ahead. "Not everything is perfect, and it cannot be, but there are already many positives," he noted. "The players are earnestly attempting to apply what we discuss and practice, so I can say I am satisfied with our progress."

The appointment represents a significant shift for Al-Ittihad, one of the Saudi Pro League's traditional powerhouses. Conceicao's departure came after failing to deliver domestic silverware, placing pressure on Wissing to restore the club's winning tradition. His immediate focus remains building cohesion and tactical discipline during the remaining pre-season matches before competitive fixtures commence. How the German adapts his philosophy to Saudi football will be crucial as Al-Ittihad pursues both domestic and continental honors in the 2025-26 season.
