Speaking to Valencia Capital Radio for the first time since the incident, the former Racing and Valencia defender expressed deep regret over his actions on the pitch.
Ayala, now 55, initially downplayed the severity of the confrontation, characterising it as "just a shove more than anything else" rather than the punch some observers described. He revealed that his reaction stemmed from words exchanged during the post-match melee but refused to disclose the specific provocation. "I regret it. Because of the position I hold, I cannot allow my emotions, or whatever I may receive from the other party, to change my mood and control my actions," he stated, emphasising the responsibility that comes with his coaching role.
Taking Responsibility on the Sideline
The assistant coach stressed that his primary intention was to restore order rather than escalate tensions. "When the match ended I saw a scuffle in the middle of the pitch, so we tried to go and pull our players away," Ayala explained. He acknowledged that his conduct fell short of the standards expected from someone in his position, regardless of external provocations. The incident occurred amid wider chaos at the final, which also involved midfielder Leandro Paredes clashing with Spain's players and defender Nahuel Molina throwing a punch at teammate Rodri.
Ayala confirmed his willingness to apologise directly to Olmo, demonstrating a commitment to moving past the controversy. His comments arrive as FIFA has launched a comprehensive disciplinary investigation with a special investigator assigned to examine all events surrounding the World Cup final. This marks a significant moment in the competition's history, with multiple infractions requiring formal review.
