Arsenal are preparing for significant changes in their attacking department this summer, with former Gunners forward Jeremie Aliadiere confirming that Gabriel Jesus is likely to leave the club. The Brazil international's departure would free up both financial resources and squad space for the north London side to pursue fresh targets in the striking market.
The Gunners have maintained a strong interest in Julian Alvarez, the Argentine forward who starred at this summer's Copa America and World Cup tournaments. The 26-year-old currently plays for Atletico Madrid but has reportedly expressed a desire to seek a new challenge after two seasons in La Liga. His previous spell at Manchester City proved his credentials in English football, where he netted 36 goals across two campaigns and featured in their Treble-winning squad in 2022-23.
The Alvarez Valuation Challenge
Atletico Madrid have set an ambitious asking price for their prized asset. The Spanish club is demanding approximately €150 million (£127m/$172m) for Alvarez, who still has four years remaining on his contract. Such a fee would represent a British transfer record, forcing Arsenal to carefully weigh whether one player justifies such an investment.
Aliadiere expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect, telling GOAL: "If you tell me Alvarez is happy to come to Arsenal, I'll have him tomorrow. He's an amazing player. He does the pressing on his own." The former striker highlighted Alvarez's work ethic and movement as qualities that would strengthen Mikel Arteta's squad.
Alternative Targets in View
Should Alvarez's fee prove prohibitive, Arsenal are considering other options including Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth, who scored 13 goals last season. The Gunners currently have Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz as additional attacking options, though Jesus's exit would necessitate bolstering the position. With the transfer window remaining open until September 1, Arsenal have time to negotiate their preferred deal before their season opener against Coventry City on August 21.
