Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Kayne van Oevelen, securing the 22-year-old Dutch goalkeeper from Volendam on a long-term deal worth €4 million. The Premier League newcomers moved swiftly to finalise personal terms and conclude negotiations, with van Oevelen set to commit until summer 2031.
Van Oevelen will travel to England this week to undergo his medical examination and complete formalities ahead of Ipswich's pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain. The transfer represents a significant moment for the shot-stopper, who rejected interest from La Liga side Valencia earlier in the summer after the Spanish club failed to meet Volendam's asking price.
Record Fee for Volendam
The €4 million base fee marks the highest transfer payment Volendam have ever received for a single player in their history. While Micky van de Ven's eventual departure to Wolfsburg reached €8.5 million through lucrative sell-on clauses, van Oevelen's base fee of €4 million surpasses the €3.5 million initially paid for the centre-back. Dutch side Twente had also previously expressed interest in the goalkeeper during negotiations.
Impressive Eredivisie Performance
Van Oevelen impressed in the Eredivisie last season despite Volendam's relegation struggle, recording the highest save percentage and most saves per 90 minutes in the Dutch top flight. Across 32 league appearances, he managed just three clean sheets, highlighting the defensive challenges facing his former club. Over his entire Volendam career spanning 64 official matches, van Oevelen maintained 13 clean sheets after progressing through the academy.
Ipswich's recruitment strategy continues to take shape as they prepare for their return to top-flight football following their Championship title triumph last season.
