Martinez will remain with Atletico Nacional for the 2024-25 season before joining Liverpool's ranks permanently next summer, allowing the Anfield club direct oversight of his development during this crucial period.
The teenager was a standout performer when Colombia won the South American Under-17 Championship, defeating Argentina in the final. His form caught the attention of Liverpool's recruitment structure, which involved head of South American scouting Fernando Troiani, academy recruitment chief Chris Dowling, and director of global talent Matt Newberry. This collaborative approach reflects Liverpool's systematic method of identifying talent across multiple continents. The club sees Martinez as a prospect capable of eventually contributing to the first team, following a development pathway increasingly common among top European clubs.

Head coach Andoni Iraola has publicly acknowledged that recruitment activity remains ongoing. Speaking to media during pre-season preparations, the Spanish tactician stated the club needs additional signings despite securing wingers Víctor Munoz and defender Jeremy Jacquet. "We've signed two players already, but we need more – we know this," Iraola said. "As a coach, I selfishly want the players here from day one, but we know the market doesn't work like this. We are working incredibly hard for those signings."
