Como president Mirwan Suwarso has unveiled an ambitious blueprint to transform the Italian club into Europe's most compelling sports destination, openly defying UEFA's financial regulations and vowing to accept fines rather than compromise spending plans. The declaration comes as Como prepare for their maiden Champions League campaign following a fourth-place Serie A finish, with Suwarso determined to equip manager Cesc Fabregas with a squad capable of competing against continental giants.
In an interview with the Business of Sport podcast, Suwarso articulated a vision that extends far beyond traditional football ambitions. "We shouldn't be a football team: we should be a sports tourism destination," he explained, drawing parallels to the Los Angeles Lakers model. The strategy leverages Como's lakeside location and cultural appeal to build a global brand that transcends pitch performance. This approach reflects a broader trend among wealthy-backed Italian clubs seeking to compete with established continental powerhouses.
Aggressive Valuation Strategy
Suwarso's defiance extends to player valuations. Assane Diao, acquired for €12 million, was offered €60 million but rejected—a stance rooted in extending amortisation periods to maximise accounting profits. Similarly, Martin Baturina, signed for €18 million, carries a valuation of €75 million despite receiving bids of €55 million. These inflated prices signal Como's unwillingness to sell prematurely, even as financial scrutiny intensifies across European football.
Regarding UEFA enforcement, Suwarso adopted a combative posture. "If you have to fine us, fine us. It is part of the hurdles we have to overcome," he stated, dismissing financial fair play concerns. This aggressive positioning reflects confidence that Como's ownership structure—reportedly backed by substantial wealth—can absorb regulatory penalties without operational disruption.
