Cesc Fabregas has emerged as a potential managerial target for Crystal Palace as the Eagles prepare for a summer rebuild. The former Chelsea midfielder, currently overseeing Como's impressive rise through Italian football, could use the south London club as a launchpad before eventually returning to Stamford Bridge, according to ex-Palace striker Clinton Morrison.
Fabregas has made a striking impression in his first coaching role, guiding Como to promotion into Serie A and positioning them for European competition. The 39-year-old's tactical acumen and football intelligence have drawn admiration from those who watched him orchestrate play during his five years at Chelsea between 2014 and 2019, where he won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup, and the Europa League. Morrison believes the Italian venture has prepared him well for a step up, but perhaps not immediately to one of England's biggest clubs.
The Palace Opportunity
With Oliver Glasner preparing to depart Crystal Palace after winning three trophies in 12 months—including the 2025 FA Cup and Community Shield—the Eagles will need to attract a proven manager or an ambitious rising talent. Morrison sees clear merit in Fabregas taking the role. "Palace could be that stepping stone," Morrison told GOAL. "A young manager like that, I'd take Cesc Fabregas at Palace for sure. What he's doing at Como has been outstanding. He's worked with a younger group and their results this season have been brilliant."
The transition from Serie A to the Premier League presents a genuine test. Morrison acknowledged this challenge directly: "It's a different league. Serie A and the Premier League are totally different. It would be very intriguing." However, he stressed that emerging coaches require opportunities to develop. "I feel if you go to such a huge club like Chelsea, everyone's looking at you straight away. If you go to Palace and do well, then you can get that move to Chelsea or wherever."
Chelsea's Long-term Interest
While Xabi Alonso has emerged as the favourite to replace interim boss Calum McFarlane at Chelsea, speculation persists about alternative candidates. Some reports suggest the Blues could revisit the idea of appointing another Spanish-speaking coach with Premier League experience. Fabregas represents an intriguing prospect for the future, combining tactical nous with intimate knowledge of Chelsea's infrastructure and culture.
Should Fabregas establish himself at Palace and guide them towards European qualification or a cup run, a move to Stamford Bridge or even a return to his first love would become significantly more plausible. His intelligent football brain and proven ability to develop young talent could suit Palace's project perfectly as they look to sustain their trophy-winning momentum under new leadership.
