Andrija Maksimovic arrived at RB Leipzig last summer as one of Europe's most coveted young talents, but the Serbian winger's debut Bundesliga season has become a cautionary tale of unfulfilled potential. The 19-year-old, signed for just over €14 million, has managed only 108 minutes across ten appearances without a goal or assist—a stark contrast to the hype surrounding his arrival from Red Star Belgrade.
From Red Star Sensation to Leipzig Shadow
Maksimovic's breakthrough at Red Star Belgrade painted a picture of rare precocity. In his first professional season, the teenager delivered 20 goal contributions (10 goals, 10 assists) in 45 matches while becoming the youngest player to start each of his opening five Champions League fixtures at just 17 years and 188 days—surpassing a record held by current Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany for over two decades. His technical range, dribbling prowess and football intelligence earned him the nickname "Messi", a reference to his childhood haircut rather than playing style.
Suitors circled relentlessly. Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham United all pursued the Serbian prospect. Reality proved harsher. A thigh injury during pre-season derailed Maksimovic's integration, and though he recovered, manager Ole Werner granted him only sporadic opportunities. His Bundesliga debut came in matchday 3 against Cologne, but chances dried up dramatically after the winter break. From matchday 20 onward, Werner excluded him entirely from eleven competitive squads, naming him in only five of sixteen remaining matchday rosters.
Werner has publicly backed Maksimovic's potential, acknowledging his technical gift and tactical awareness whilst emphasizing the need for enhanced physical robustness to earn consistent minutes. Rather than abandon the prospect, RB Leipzig is now exploring a season-long loan to accelerate his development away from the crowded attacking options at the Bundesliga club.
