Bayern Munich's European campaign ended in disappointment as they fell to Paris Saint-Germain 6-5 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-final, prompting intense scrutiny of manager Vincent Kompany's tactical decisions. Former Liverpool and Bayern midfielder Dietmar Hamann has questioned the coach's defensive setup, player selection, and overall approach against elite continental opposition.
Kompany's High Defensive Line Under Scrutiny
Hamann pinpointed Kompany's aggressive high pressing system as a critical vulnerability that PSG systematically exploited throughout the tie. The high defensive line proved particularly damaging in the second leg, where Bayern's back line was repeatedly caught out by PSG's explosive counter-attacking football. Ousmane Dembele's early goal exemplified how easily the Bavarians' setup crumbled against world-class attacking talent, with the winger benefiting from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's devastating left-flank run in just the third minute.
"Whether you should show up like that over 180 minutes against PSG is a question you have to ask Vincent Kompany," Hamann stated in his Sky Sport column. While acknowledging such aggressive tactics work within the Bundesliga, he stressed the approach leaves defences dangerously exposed when facing elite European sides. Bayern's domestic dominance cannot translate directly to the Champions League without tactical adjustment, a lesson the club appears to have learned painfully.
Questionable Team Selection Decisions
Beyond tactical philosophy, Hamann criticized specific lineup choices that weakened Bayern's chances. Jamal Musiala's inclusion in the starting XI despite recent poor form raised eyebrows, with Hamann suggesting Leon Goretzka might have provided better balance. The absence of Serge Gnabry—sidelined by a torn adductor muscle sustained on April 19—represented an unavoidable but significant loss in attacking penetration.
Hamann also questioned Alphonso Davies' recent contract extension, noting the left-back's performances have failed to justify the lucrative deal offered. The Canadian defender struggled to impose himself against PSG's attacking threats across both legs.
Standout Performers Amid the Defeat
Despite the semi-final exit, Hamann reserved considerable praise for two Bayern attackers who carried the side's European burden. Michael Olise contributed five Champions League goals and seven assists this season, while Luis Diaz added seven goals and four assists. "Without Olise and Luis Diaz, Bayern wouldn't have even reached the semi-finals," Hamann acknowledged, highlighting their clinical finishing when opportunities arose.
Hamann's assessment of Bayern's squad depth proved damning for a club of their stature. Beyond Manuel Neuer, Diaz, Olise, and Aleksandar Pavlovic, he identified insufficient world-class talent capable of delivering in decisive European matches. This structural weakness exposed itself starkly against PSG's constellation of elite performers across multiple positions.
Bayern's domestic season remains salvageable with the Bundesliga title secured and the DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart scheduled for May 23, offering a chance to rescue the campaign with silverware. However, their European limitations suggest significant squad reinforcement will be required to challenge for Champions League honours next season.
