Nicolas Jackson will depart Bayern Munich this summer despite manager Vincent Kompany wanting to retain the striker, according to legendary Germany international Lothar Matthäus. The Senegalese forward arrived on loan from Chelsea last season and has impressed in a rotational capacity, but the €65 million permanent fee remains prohibitively expensive for the Bundesliga champions.
Kompany's Failed Attempt to Keep Jackson
Speaking on Sky90, Matthäus revealed that Kompany had internally pushed to keep Jackson beyond the current campaign. "Kompany is convinced of Jackson's quality and would have liked to keep him in Munich," Matthäus stated. However, the manager faced a financial barrier: the asking price was simply too steep for Bayern's board to justify. Kompany made his position clear internally, but even his backing could not bridge the gap between the club's willingness to spend and Chelsea's valuation.
Bayern paid a €16.5 million loan fee last summer, securing Jackson's services for the 2024-25 season. Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed in late April that the forward would return to Stamford Bridge once the loan expired, ending speculation about a permanent move. Jackson has delivered solid contributions with 10 goals and 4 assists across 33 competitive matches, proving effective as a backup option in Bayern's attacking setup.
Squad Updates Ahead of Final Fixtures
Bayern's injury concerns eased after Leon Goretzka sustained a head injury during the 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg. The midfielder was struck on the temple by a free-kick in the 26th minute but continued playing until halftime, when precautionary measures saw him substituted. Sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed Goretzka will be available for both the Bundesliga finale against Cologne and the DFB Cup final against Stuttgart the following week.
Kompany granted his squad three days' special leave following the Wolfsburg win, allowing players like Joshua Kimmich and Harry Kane to recover mentally and physically after an intense fixture schedule. Preparations resume Wednesday ahead of the title-deciding league match, with Bayern eyeing back-to-back domestic honours. Bayern secured the Bundesliga crown weeks earlier and now focus on completing the double in Berlin.
