Manchester City have announced plans to immortalise departing manager Pep Guardiola by naming the expanded North Stand at the Etihad Stadium after him and commissioning a bronze statue outside the newly-renamed structure. The honour recognises a decade of transformative leadership that reshaped English football and elevated the club to global prominence.
The Pep Guardiola Stand will open to supporters for the first time during Guardiola's final match in charge against Aston Villa on Sunday, creating an emotional full-circle moment at a venue that has hosted countless trophy-lifting celebrations. The redevelopment project, initiated in late 2023, added over 7,000 seats and increased stadium capacity to 61,000.
A Legacy Beyond Trophies
Guardiola joins club legends Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero in receiving permanent recognition around the Etihad campus. Speaking at his press conference, the Catalan manager reflected on the announcement with characteristic humility. "I have no words," Guardiola said. "I like the feeling that my vibe or my energy will be there forever."
Club owner Sheikh Mansour emphasised that Guardiola's impact transcends silverware. "He has made an indelible imprint on the DNA of the Club. One that is borne more from how he won than from the many trophies he lifted," Mansour stated. Under Guardiola's stewardship, City claimed four consecutive Premier League titles and a historic treble in 2022-23—the first English top-flight club to win the domestic league, cup and European championship in a single season.
Chief Executive Khaldoon Al Mubarak described the tribute as recognition of Guardiola's influence extending beyond football. "The unique relationship that he has with our fans has been earned through the honesty and passion of his ten seasons fighting to bring them success," Al Mubarak said. Sunday's fixture will mark an emotional farewell, with supporters afforded one final opportunity to honour the manager's achievements within the newly-named stand before City embarks on its next chapter.
