Riyad Mahrez Reveals Barcelona Dream Before Manchester City

Riyad Mahrez has disclosed that joining Barcelona to play alongside Lionel Messi under Pep Guardiola represented his ultimate career ambition. The Algerian winger, now 35 and plying his trade in Saudi Arabia, opened up about how contract negotiations derailed his path to Camp Nou during the peak of his powers.

Following Leicester City's remarkable 2016 Premier League title triumph, Mahrez became one of Europe's most coveted attackers. Multiple elite clubs pursued him, yet a critical contractual oversight proved decisive. Unlike teammate N'Golo Kanté, who negotiated a €30 million release clause that enabled his swift exit to Chelsea, Mahrez rejected similar protections. This decision left Leicester in complete control of his destiny.

The Contract That Cost a Dream

In an interview with Koora Break, Mahrez explained the circumstances: "My dream was to play for Barcelona with Guardiola and Messi. I spoke to many teams before joining City. I spoke to Real Madrid, Barcelona and United, but Leicester were asking for very high transfer fees to let me go, and I didn't have a release clause, so I couldn't join those teams." The absence of an exit mechanism effectively priced out Spanish giants during their strongest interest, forcing the winger to remain at the King Power Stadium for two additional seasons.

When Mahrez finally departed in 2018, it was for Manchester City in a £60 million deal—not Spain. Under Guardiola's tutelage, he evolved into one of the Premier League's most dangerous attacking talents. His Manchester tenure proved extraordinarily successful: four Premier League titles, five domestic cups, and crucially, the Champions League trophy in his final season before joining Al-Ahli in 2023.

Legacy Beyond Barcelona

While the Barcelona dream remained unfulfilled, Mahrez's trajectory at Manchester City exceeded what many anticipated. His trophy haul at the Etihad rivals that of any African player in English football history, demonstrating that sometimes the path not taken leads to equal—or greater—fulfillment. His next chapter in Saudi Arabia represents the twilight of a career defined by resilience and world-class performances on football's biggest stages.
