Michael Carrick should surround himself with Manchester United legends to ensure long-term success as permanent manager, according to former striker Louis Saha. The interim boss is close to securing a full-time contract after an impressive run that has seen him win 10 of his first 15 Premier League games, but Saha believes additional elite voices in the backroom are crucial.
Building a Winning Backroom
Saha drew parallels to Mikel Arteta's setup at Arsenal, where former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze provides tactical input and institutional knowledge. The 44-year-old Carrick, who led United back to the Champions League for the first time since 2023–24, would benefit from similar support to challenge and develop his ideas. "Who could challenge Michael sometimes? Not in a bad way, but by giving different kinds of ideas," Saha told Compare.Bet. "A combination like Gabriel Heinze has done with Arsenal and Mikel Arteta. You need representation of a different kind of diplomacy."
Saha identified potential candidates to strengthen Carrick's coaching structure:
- Rio Ferdinand – centre-back legend with championship pedigree
- Nemanja Vidic – commanding defensive presence and leader
- Patrice Evra – experienced left-back with tactical intelligence
- Ruud van Nistelrooy – forward who brings "big club" experience
Stability Over Star Names
The former United striker emphasised that Carrick's greatest strength is offering continuity during a period of transition. High-profile external appointments typically bring tactical changes and squad uncertainty—precisely what the current squad does not need. "The main thing for Man Utd is consistency and stability, and Carrick definitely represents that," Saha explained. "If anyone comes in, even with the biggest pedigree, they bring changes and uncertainty."
Saha also appealed to club legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville, who have previously questioned Carrick's credentials, to offer public backing. Young managers require internal and external support to thrive—a lesson evidenced by Vincent Kompany's early success at Bayern Munich. With Liverpool struggling this season, United have a genuine opportunity to close the gap if Carrick is given the right environment and resources to implement his vision.
