Ronaldo Return to Real Madrid Unlikely Despite Mourinho

Jose Mourinho's return to Real Madrid has ignited speculation about a potential Cristiano Ronaldo homecoming, but former La Liga midfielder Gaizka Mendieta believes such a reunion remains highly unlikely. While the Portuguese pair shared three trophy-laden years together between 2010 and 2013, Mendieta suggests the 41-year-old forward's future lies firmly in Saudi Arabia, where he remains contracted to Al-Nassr until June 2027.

Mendieta, who represented Valencia and Barcelona during his distinguished career, acknowledged the appeal of reuniting two iconic figures at the Bernabéu. However, he expressed significant doubts about Ronaldo's current readiness for elite European football. Speaking to PlayUK, the former Spain international stated: "Jose Mourinho is back at Real Madrid, the second miracle would be Cristiano Ronaldo back there. But I don't think we will see that. He's as happy as he can be in Saudi. From what I've seen, I don't think he's at the level of consistency to play for a team like Real Madrid right now."

Mourinho's Second Stint Poses Tactical Challenges

Beyond the Ronaldo question, Mendieta raised concerns about Mourinho's appointment itself, noting that managerial returns rarely succeed at elite clubs. The veteran analyst emphasized that Madrid's current squad requires substantial investment across multiple positions—a reality that deterred other top coaches from accepting the position earlier this season. Xabi Alonso reportedly made squad reinforcements a precondition before declining the role, highlighting the structural challenges facing any incoming manager.

Mendieta outlined the tactical hurdles awaiting Mourinho: "I think for any coach, even with a big reputation and history, right now Real Madrid is a difficult team to take. There are two sides to it. One is the fact that they haven't won for two years. But there's also no such a project for these coaches—almost one player needed in each line of the team."

The Bernabéu has endured two seasons without domestic silverware, creating both opportunity and risk for the incoming Portuguese manager. Rather than relying on nostalgic moves, Mourinho must build a competitive squad capable of challenging Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in La Liga while competing for the Champions League. As Ronaldo continues his goal-scoring pursuit in the Saudi Pro League, Madrid's focus must shift toward identifying young talent and strategic signings to restore the club's former dominance.
