Ronaldo's Level Unchanged at Al-Nassr, Says Portugal Boss

Roberto Martinez has firmly rejected suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo's Saudi Pro League move has diminished his international impact. After visiting Riyadh to scout Portugal's players, the national team coach praised the 41-year-old's sustained hunger and physical conditioning ahead of the 2026 World Cup campaign.

Martinez attended Al-Nassr's 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal on May 12, using the occasion to evaluate several squad members including captain Ronaldo, Ruben Neves, and Joao Felix. The Portuguese tactician expressed unwavering confidence in the veteran forward's contributions despite his relocation to the Middle East last year. "Cristiano continues to have a great desire to win and I see no sign that his level has dropped since he came to Saudi Arabia," Martinez told the German Press Agency. "He is playing exceptionally well and has proven his importance to the Portuguese national team."

Ronaldo's Prolific Season in Saudi Arabia

The forward has delivered a remarkable campaign for Al-Nassr, scoring 26 goals with three assists to help propel the club toward the Saudi Pro League title. At an age when most players experience natural decline, Ronaldo's output underscores his sustained effectiveness. His performance mirrors a pattern established across his career: adapting to new environments while maintaining elite-level productivity.

However, Martinez emphasized that individual accolades cannot guarantee selection alone. "Achievements are not enough to guarantee a place in the national team," he stated. "It is also necessary to contribute to the team's success. Although he is the captain and has achieved unprecedented success, he has the same responsibilities as any other player." This balanced perspective reflects Martinez's meritocratic approach to squad building, treating even legendary players by consistent performance standards.

World Cup Squad Announcement Imminent

The Portugal manager will announce his 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup on May 19. Should Ronaldo be included, he would make a historic sixth World Cup appearance, extending a record that began at the 2006 tournament in Germany. Portugal's campaign kicks off on June 17 against DR Congo in Houston, beginning a competitive Group K that also features Uzbekistan and Colombia. Ronaldo's availability and form will prove crucial as Portugal targets a deep run in North America.
