Unai Simón says he would reject 150 million euro offer to stay at Athletic Bilbao

Goalkeeper Unai Simón has stated he would turn down a 150 million euro offer to remain at Athletic Bilbao, emphasizing his deep commitment to the club.

Simón signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao on 24 May 2024 that contains no release clause. Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, he explained the decision reflects his genuine attachment to the club rather than a contractual technicality.

"I don't think the question of whether or not there's a release clause necessarily reflects the truth of your feelings towards Athletic Bilbao," Simón said. "In the end, when you want to prove that you love something or someone, you do so through your daily actions."

The goalkeeper said his bond with the club extends beyond any financial figure. "I will not leave this place. Even if someone came and paid the release clause value of 150 million, I still would not leave. I don't want to leave," he stated, adding that he would only depart if Athletic Bilbao decided not to keep him.

Simón also compared the emotional significance of winning the Copa del Rey with Athletic Bilbao to his World Cup victory with Spain. While acknowledging the World Cup as the highest professional achievement, he described the five days following the Copa del Rey win as "among the most wonderful days of my life," citing the celebrations with teammates, friends and family, including a traditional boat procession through the city.
