Manuel Neuer took full responsibility for Bayern Munich's catastrophic start against Augsburg, which saw the hosts score the fastest goal in Bundesliga history just eight seconds after kick-off. The 2-2 draw at the WWK Arena on Saturday handed the initiative to rivals Borussia Dortmund, who now sit top of the table with a two-point advantage over the Bavarian giants.
The chaos erupted immediately when Neuer failed to control a simple back pass from Luis Diaz. Ruben Vollhaber pounced on the loose ball and calmly finished into an empty net, shattering the previous record of nine seconds set by Kevin Volland—who ironically scored against Neuer in 2015. Speaking to reporters, the goalkeeper acknowledged his poor decision-making: "It was a silly mistake on my part. I should have put the ball on my left foot, because two players were pressing me from the right side. Then I tried to find a solution. But quite simply, I should have made a different decision."
Recovery and Frustration
Despite the early shock, Neuer recovered his composure as Bayern mounted a fightback. Ismael Seibari levelled in the 55th minute, only for Rodrigo Ribeiro to restore Augsburg's lead in the 64th. Nathaniel Brown salvaged a point with an 80th-minute equalizer, but the draw proved costly in the title race.
Bayern's afternoon was defined by frustration in the final third. The visitors had four goals disallowed for offside—a sequence so unusual that Neuer described the experience as unprecedented. "We had chances, but unfortunately we failed to take them," he reflected. "We were also a little unlucky with some of the tight offside decisions. It is a match most of us have never experienced before. It was very strange to score that many goals and then have them disallowed."
With only 11 points from five matches, Bayern's early-season stumble leaves them vulnerable as the Bundesliga title race enters its decisive phase. The pressure now intensifies on der Rekordmeister to find consistency before the gap to Dortmund widens further.
