Kennet Eichhorn Transfer: BVB Lead Race for Hertha Prospect

Borussia Dortmund have emerged as frontrunners to sign Hertha BSC's teenage sensation Kennet Eichhorn, according to reports from Bild. A reported meeting between BVB's sporting director Ole Book and the 16-year-old has shifted the dynamic in what has become one of the Bundesliga's most intriguing transfer races. The midfielder's stock has risen sharply following a record-breaking performance that has attracted interest from multiple top-flight clubs across Germany.

Eichhorn made history on Sunday when he became the youngest ever goalscorer in the 2. Bundesliga, netting during Hertha's 2-1 victory over Greuther Fürth at age 16 years, 9 months and 13 days—erasing a 39-year-old record previously held by Gunther Reeg since 1985. His composed finish on a weaving solo run demonstrated the technical composure and physicality expected of a far more experienced player. Head coach Stefan Leitl praised the teenager's maturity: "What a goal. He's only 16—what more can you say? To perform in this league like a seasoned second-division player says it all."

Competitive Battle Takes Shape

Dortmund's pursuit gained momentum after earlier reports suggested Eichhorn harboured reservations about the club's tactical approach under manager Niko Kovac. That perception appears to have shifted following direct dialogue with BVB's hierarchy. Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen remain in contention, though Bayern's internal uncertainty about the move has weakened their position. RB Leipzig has also been mentioned as a potential destination.

Hertha's strategy centres on retaining their prospect for another season. The Bundesliga club plans to activate a €12 million release clause in summer 2025 and immediately loan Eichhorn back to Berlin for the 2024-25 campaign. However, this scenario holds little credibility. According to reports, Eichhorn demands an immediate move to a regular Champions League club that guarantees consistent first-team opportunities—ruling out loan arrangements or mid-table alternatives.

For Dortmund specifically, acquiring Eichhorn would address a longstanding tactical need. The club has lacked a natural defensive-midfield partner for Felix Nmecha, making a midfielder of Eichhorn's potential profile an immediate tactical reinforcement rather than a future prospect. Hertha sporting director Benjamin Weber remains hopeful, emphasizing the development advantages of remaining in Berlin: "To have that security at a young age. Time to develop. That's what we can offer." Yet with elite clubs circling and a generational talent seeking immediate impact, the capital club's retention hopes appear increasingly fragile heading into the critical negotiations of the coming months.
