Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker expressed frustration at the selective nature of VAR intervention. "Probably a foul but that's not what VAR is supposed to be, is it?" he remarked, highlighting a broader concern about the system's application. The former England striker suggested that if VAR was reviewing goalkeeper contact, officials should have been equally rigorous in examining defensive infractions elsewhere in the play.
"There was a lot of grappling by Arsenal players on the West Ham attackers," Lineker explained, noting that he would feel aggrieved as a West Ham or Manchester City supporter. His point centred on inconsistency: goalkeepers receive heightened protection under the laws of the game, yet other forms of obstruction during set pieces often go unpunished. Research from the Premier League shows that approximately 34% of corner-kick fouls go undetected across a typical season, raising questions about selective enforcement.
Rooney Defends VAR Decision
Not everyone agreed with Lineker's assessment. Wayne Rooney countered that VAR performed correctly, describing the contact as "a clear foul" on the goalkeeper.
