Joao Pedro Names Gabriel Magalhaes Toughest Opponent in

Joao Pedro has singled out Gabriel Magalhaes as the most formidable defender he has faced during the 2025-26 campaign, praising the Arsenal centre-back's exceptional positional awareness and recovery pace. The Chelsea striker revealed his surprise at Gabriel's elite defensive standards after direct encounters between the two clubs in the Premier League.

Speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, Pedro expressed genuine astonishment at Gabriel's ability to anticipate attacking movements. "I was surprised! You know they are good, but when you are on the pitch, it is different," the Brazilian forward explained. "I think this season, Gabriel has been inspired. He is so fast and so strong, but it is his positioning that is the most difficult thing. Every time I thought I had a yard of space, he was already there."

Gabriel's Recovery Pace Sets Him Apart

What impressed Pedro most was not Gabriel's physical dominance but his explosive recovery speed. Standing 6ft 3in tall, the Arsenal defender combines aerial strength with rare acceleration for a player of his stature. Pedro noted that moments when he believed he had created separation were frequently neutralised by Gabriel's rapid repositioning. "For a guy of his size, his acceleration is incredible," Pedro remarked. "You think you've beaten him for pace on the turn, and then suddenly he's back alongside you or making a block. It's frustrating as a striker because you feel like you've done everything right, and he still manages to recover."

Gabriel's defensive intelligence has been foundational to Arsenal's league-leading defensive record. The Gunners have conceded just 26 goals across 36 Premier League matches, with the centre-back's composure and reading of the game forming the bedrock of their success. Pedro highlighted Gabriel's controlled aggression, contrasting it with defenders who rely on reckless challenges. "He plays with so much passion, but he is also very controlled," Pedro said. "As a striker, you want defenders to make a mistake or dive in, but he is like a wall. I've played against many great defenders in Europe, but Gabriel is the one who has made me think the most this year."

Arsenal currently lead the Premier League table with 79 points from 36 matches, five clear of Manchester City. With two fixtures remaining against Burnley and Crystal Palace, the Gunners are within touching distance of their first title in 22 years—a drought that Gabriel and the defensive unit will be instrumental in ending should they maintain their current trajectory.
