Paolo Vanoli has officially been named Fiorentina manager, taking over from sacked Fabio Grosso. The Viola confirmed the appointment after Vanoli accepted the role with immediate effect, beginning his first training session on the day of announcement.
Vanoli has signed a two-year contract worth €1.2 million per season, with the possibility of a one-year extension through 2029 if specified performance conditions are achieved. His return to Florence marks a second stint with the Serie A club, having previously managed the Tuscan side before his departure.
Tactical Philosophy and Squad Fit
The 50-year-old Italian tactician arrives with clear ideas about system and personnel. During his previous time at Fiorentina, Vanoli initially deployed a 3-5-2 formation before transitioning to a 4-3-3 setup. He had publicly expressed frustration about the squad's lack of natural wingers, stating: "This group does not have genuine wingers and that makes the situation complicated: in modern football their role is fundamental."
That obstacle has since been addressed. Fiorentina now possesses established winger options across both flanks, with Mastantuono and Gnonto competing on the right, and Pedro Gonçalves and Njie providing depth on the left. This tactical flexibility should allow Vanoli to implement his preferred attacking approach more effectively than before.

Vanoli's appointment is expected to revitalise several underperforming talents. Nicolò Fagioli, the former Juventus midfielder, stands to benefit most from the regime change. Under Vanoli's previous tenure, Fagioli flourished as a deep-lying playmaker in the 4-3-3, consistently delivering strong creative output. Grosso's system never unlocked the same form, with the midfielder cycling in and out of the starting XI.
Vanoli praised Fagioli's intelligence and technical personality during a recent interview, highlighting his adaptability: "He is a talented player with great footballing intelligence and technical personality. Everyone thought he could not play as the playmaker, but when someone is intelligent and makes himself available he can cover any role. With me he did it really well." This endorsement suggests Fagioli will be central to Vanoli's midfield plans, displacing Oulai as the favoured option.
Midfielder Ndour could also enjoy renewed prominence after demonstrating encouraging progress under Vanoli previously, only to fade under Grosso's stewardship. The appointment reshuffles Fiorentina's competitive hierarchy as the club looks to climb the Serie A table in the coming months.
