Joe Cole Slams Chelsea for Selling Kai Havertz to Arsenal

Joe Cole has launched a scathing critique of Chelsea's transfer strategy after watching Kai Havertz deliver a decisive performance against his former club. The German forward scored the equaliser in Arsenal's 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Sunday, a result that prompted Cole to question why the Blues allowed such a "world-class" talent to strengthen a direct London rival.

Cole, speaking on Premier League Productions, expressed frustration over the £65 million deal that saw Havertz move to the Emirates in 2023. "When you've got Kai Havertz at your club, you're watching him every day, week in, week out," Cole stated. "The managers and coaches come and go, but the Directors of Football? Look at the amount of money Chelsea has spent on centre-forwards since they let him out the door. It's just not good enough."

A Pattern of Costly Departures

The former Chelsea winger drew parallels to another regrettable exit, invoking the memory of Kevin De Bruyne's departure. Cole questioned how elite institutions repeatedly allow emerging talent to flourish elsewhere: "Those kinds of deals never happened at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, or at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger. When did you hear of them letting go of a player who went on to become world-class at one of your rivals?" This pattern of strategic missteps has become increasingly damaging to Chelsea's competitive standing in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta offered a contrasting perspective, praising Havertz's integration and current form. "He looks happy, he's settled, and he's scoring goals," Arteta noted. Martin Odegaard highlighted Havertz's intelligent movement and the way he occupies defenders, proving instrumental in Arsenal's attacking play. The performance reinforced that Havertz has found his ideal environment at Arsenal after leaving Chelsea, where he struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter despite his obvious technical ability.

The defeat leaves Chelsea fourth with six points after three matches, while Arsenal edges closer to a strong start with their maximum nine-point haul. Chelsea must refocus when they face Leeds United in the Carabao Cup midweek, while Arsenal prepare for their Champions League opener against Napoli on Wednesday, hoping to build on this domestic momentum in European football.
