UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body handed down substantial penalties to both players and their Turkish club for the post-match chaos at the Groupama Stadium.
The former Arsenal midfielder received a four-match ban and €50,000 fine, with two matches suspended on a one-year probationary period. This means Guendouzi will miss Fenerbahce's opening two Champions League league phase fixtures against Roma and Aston Villa. The CEDB determined that his provocative gestures toward Lyon supporters and opposing players directly triggered the confrontation that followed the final whistle.
Greenwood, the ex-Manchester United forward, was hit with a one-match suspension and €30,000 fine for his involvement in the melee. Officials cited breaches of fundamental rules of good conduct, with his ban also carrying a one-year probationary clause. The winger's punishment reflected what UEFA deemed a lesser role in the incident compared to his teammate.
Club Sanctions and Wider Fallout
Fenerbahce itself faced significant financial consequences. The club incurred three separate fines totalling €95,000: €30,000 for lighting and throwing fireworks, €15,000 for crowd disturbances, and €50,000 for breaches of general conduct rules by the playing squad. These penalties underscored UEFA's commitment to holding clubs accountable for both player behaviour and supporter misconduct during European competitions.
Lyon did not escape discipline either. The most notable individual punishment targeted Antonio Ferreira, the club's goalkeeping coach, who was suspended for five matches—with two suspended—for serious assault after charging at Guendouzi during the conflict. Olympique Lyonnais received €108,500 in fines covering fireworks, object throwing, crowd disturbances, and general conduct violations.
In the immediate aftermath, Guendouzi attempted to minimise the incident, describing his gestures as "just banter" and typical competitive gamesmanship. However, UEFA's formal investigation concluded his actions transcended acceptable sporting rivalry and directly endangered match security. Fenerbahce's path to the Champions League league phase continues despite these disciplinary setbacks, having qualified after a 2-1 win secured their 3-2 aggregate victory over the French side.
