Caicedo's injury troubles have already disrupted his campaign. Speaking at Friday's pre-match press conference, Alonso explained his approach: "We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday. We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision." The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder stressed patience as medical staff completed their assessments throughout the weekend.
Should Caicedo fail Saturday's fitness test, Alonso has identified several alternatives within his squad. The manager highlighted midfield depth following the summer departure of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City. "[We have] different qualities, personalities," Alonso noted. "Valentin's young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what's going on in the games."
