Raphael Guerreiro remains without a club more than a month after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of June. The 32-year-old Portuguese defender has attracted interest from several European sides, but concrete offers have yet to materialise. His search for a new employer has taken an unexpected twist: he cannot lean on Thomas Tuchel, the coach who orchestrated his two previous transfers, as Tuchel now manages the England national team.
Tuchel's Role in Guerreiro's Career
Tuchel has been central to Guerreiro's career trajectory. In 2016, the Bayern Munich director of football signed him from FC Lorient to Borussia Dortmund for €12 million. Seven years later, in 2023, Guerreiro followed him again on a free transfer to Bavaria. A potential move to Paris Saint-Germain also fell through during Tuchel's time at PSG. Now, with Tuchel focused on strengthening England's wide defensive options, Guerreiro's Portuguese nationality works against any possible reunion.
Bayern Munich confirmed in March that the versatile defender's contract would not be renewed. Sporting director Max Eberl praised Guerreiro's reliability and character, acknowledging his consistent contributions when called upon. Despite being rarely a starter during his three seasons in Munich, the left-back made 29 appearances last season, scoring six goals and providing three assists—respectable numbers for a squad player.
Transfer Rumours and Potential Destinations
Guerreiro has been linked with several clubs across Europe. Initial speculation centred on Bayer Leverkusen as a replacement for Alejandro Grimaldo, while Benfica also expressed interest. However, neither move progressed. Italian outlets Tuttosport and Gazzetta dello Sport recently reported that AC Milan is considering Guerreiro as a successor to Pervis Estupiñán, should the Colombian move to Aston Villa. His versatility across midfield and defensive positions makes him an attractive prospect for most top-tier squads, despite recurring muscle injuries that have interrupted his career.
Guerreiro is not alone in his search for a new club. Fellow Bayern departure Leon Goretzka has also been linked with Italian sides and remains available on a free transfer.
