PSV Eindhoven suffered a sobering pre-season setback, losing 3-1 to Villarreal in their first public friendly of the summer. The Eredivisie outfit showed promise in the opening stages but capitulated after half-time, undone by a catalogue of defensive errors that will concern manager Peter Bosz ahead of the season.
The visitors began with genuine attacking intent. Alassane Pléa received a crisp cross from Sven Mijnans within two minutes and tested the Spanish goalkeeper, while both Dennis Man and Tygo Land created openings that went begging. PSV's early momentum, however, proved deceptive. Once Villarreal settled, Georges Mikautadze tormented the Eindhoven defence with clinical finishing opportunities. The former Ajax forward squandered three gilt-edged chances in rapid succession, only denied by goalkeeper Matej Kovar's reflexes and one wayward finish.
Defensive Lapses Prove Costly After Half-Time
PSV's backline looked fragile throughout the first half, with goalkeeper Kovar culpable for a loose pass and centre-back Flamingo making unforced errors. Ruben van Bommel, returning to the XI after nearly a year sidelined by injury, could do little to stabilise matters from defence. Bosz introduced Amir Bouhamdi for Van Bommel after the break, but the pattern of play remained unchanged until the floodgates opened.
The breakthrough arrived in the 66th minute when Pléa's careless possession loss allowed Mikautadze to burst through and round Kovar before rolling into an empty net. Six minutes later, Thiam made it 2-0 with a simple tap-in from a cross, exposing PSV's inability to clear danger. A moment of salvage came when Mauro Júnior capitalised on sloppy Villarreal defending to pull one back in the 75th minute, but another Kovar error immediately led to Cabanes sealing the defeat at 3-1.
PSV face local rivals FC Eindhoven in a friendly on Wednesday before their season truly begins next Sunday with the Johan Cruyff Shield clash against AZ Alkmaar. The defensive vulnerabilities on display will demand urgent attention.
