Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Colapinto took aim at the Spanish team's post-match conduct, claiming their celebration lacked the passion and creativity that defines Argentina's renowned fan culture.
The Formula 1 star expressed frustration at what he viewed as Spain's delayed enthusiasm for their own shirts. "The spread of Spanish shirts during the World Cup? Suddenly they started wearing them when they won, not before. It's shameful," Colapinto told ESPN through Spanish outlet Sport. He further criticized the absence of distinctive chants, drawing a contrast with Argentina's tradition of composing elaborate songs for major tournaments. "They don't even have songs to chant," he remarked, highlighting a key difference in how the two nations celebrate sporting achievement.
Defending Messi and Calling for Unity
Beyond the celebration critique, Colapinto addressed reports of Argentine fans attempting to burn Lionel Messi's shirt following the defeat. He firmly rejected such actions, emphasizing Messi's Barcelona legacy and universal respect across Latin America. "Messi played for Barcelona and gave the Spanish fans many happy moments, but now it seems as if it is a war between two countries, and that is not nice. I don't think burning Messi's shirts is right," Colapinto stated during the media session alongside Spanish drivers Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz.
The Alpine driver called for reconciliation between the neighboring nations, framing the dispute as unhelpful and unnecessary. "We are two Latin countries, and that is wonderful, but there are differences that make it seem as though we are enemies," he explained. He acknowledged Spain as deserving champions while maintaining his critique of their celebratory style, urging them to "improve their songs a little" and "be more creative, as they were dull."
