Joao Palhinha Transfer: Sporting and Benfica Chase Bayern

Joao Palhinha is attracting serious interest from two major Portuguese clubs as his future at Bayern Munich remains uncertain. According to reports from Correio da Manha Radio, both Sporting CP and Benfica have made enquiries about the midfielder, with Sporting reportedly treating a move as an "absolute priority."

The 30-year-old is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where he has delivered mixed performances during a turbulent season in the Premier League. Palhinha arrived at Spurs on a five-million-euro loan deal that includes a €25 million option to buy. His early campaign showed promise—he started regularly through November and contributed to Tottenham's title challenge—but he has since become a rotation option as the club's form deteriorated dramatically.

Portugal Calling: Family and Unfinished Business

Palhinha's desire to return to Portugal is rooted in personal reasons. At 30, he wants to be closer to his children, making a homecoming emotionally appealing. A Sporting CP return carries particular significance: he developed as a player there and won the Primeira Liga title between 2013 and 2022 before his move to Fulham and subsequently Munich in 2024.

His €51 million transfer from Fulham to Bayern in 2024 was orchestrated by then-manager Thomas Tuchel, but circumstances shifted when Tuchel departed. Under Vincent Kompany, Palhinha struggled to establish himself, appearing sparingly before the loan move to London.

Tottenham's Decision and Bayern's Dilemma

Spurs remain open to converting the loan into a permanent deal but want to renegotiate the €25 million purchase clause downward—a proposal Bayern may entertain. However, the move hinges on Tottenham securing Premier League survival, which remains uncertain. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that uncertainty surrounds Palhinha's future, though he praised the midfielder's mentality and fighting spirit.

Palhinha's Bayern contract runs until 2028 with a reported €10 million annual salary expected to decrease, given his absence from Munich's plans. Whether Sporting, Benfica, or Tottenham ultimately secures him will depend on the club's league status come summer and negotiations over transfer terms that suit all parties.
