Iraola Targets Winger Signing as Liverpool Seeks Salah

Andoni Iraola has confirmed that Liverpool remain active in the transfer market, with reinforcements across multiple positions a priority before the new season begins. The Spanish manager acknowledged that departures of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate, combined with ongoing injury concerns, have created gaps that must be filled.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's pre-season fixture against Sunderland in Nashville, Iraola outlined the club's transfer strategy. "There are clear positions that we know we need to reinforce," he stated. "For example, we definitely need to sign a winger." The manager stressed that the club must balance opportunity with financial prudence, assessing available talent on the market while considering the quality of existing squad depth.

Experience Crucial as Liverpool Rebuild

Beyond attacking recruitment, Iraola emphasised the importance of retaining experienced figures like Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. The departures of Salah and Robertson have stripped valuable leadership from the dressing room, making established players essential anchors for the incoming signings. "I believe Alisson will be extremely important in helping new players adapt," Iraola explained. "We need role models within the squad—players who have spent many years at the club."

Liverpool have already completed moves for right-back Jeremie Frimpong and Victor Munoz this summer. However, injuries to Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni add pressure to bolster depth. The Reds face a tight timeline, with their Premier League campaign launching away to Newcastle United on 23 August—just weeks after their scheduled pre-season friendlies against Wrexham, Leeds United, Monaco and Como.

Iraola's willingness to operate flexibly in the market reflects Liverpool's pragmatic approach: quality over quantity, with an eye on both immediate needs and long-term stability as they prepare for a pivotal campaign.
