Barcelona edges Bayern Munich in Anthony Gordon transfer race

FC Barcelona has emerged as the frontrunner to sign Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon, with the English forward reportedly keen on joining the Catalan club ahead of both Bayern Munich and Liverpool. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona's sustained pursuit and ambitious sporting project has swayed the 25-year-old's decision, despite the significant financial obstacles that remain.

Barcelona's recent delegation to London, led by sporting director Deco alongside assistants Bojan Krkic and Joao Amaral, proved decisive in convincing Gordon of the club's ambitions. The charm offensive successfully demonstrated the Blaugrana's vision for the former Everton striker, who would provide crucial depth on the left flank and offer tactical flexibility through the middle. Gordon's arrival would ease pressure on Barcelona's attacking resources, particularly with Brazilian winger Raphinha sidelined by injuries and Marcus Rashford's loan spell set to expire.

Negotiation hurdles ahead

While Barcelona and Gordon have agreed personal terms, Newcastle holds considerable leverage. The Magpies value their academy graduate at between 85 and 90 million euros, a fee Barcelona currently deems excessive. However, Gordon's explicit desire to move to Camp Nou could prove instrumental in negotiations. The player's wages fit comfortably within Barcelona's budget, and the club is targeting a five-year contract structure.

Bayern Munich's earlier interest now appears unlikely to materialise, while Liverpool's late transfer push has also fallen short. The false nine positioning that Gordon offers would complement Barcelona's plans to eventually recruit a traditional number nine, allowing sporting director Deco to operate with greater strategic flexibility rather than pursuing a direct replacement for the departed Robert Lewandowski. Gordon's versatility addresses Barcelona's immediate attacking needs while the club pursues longer-term striker targets during the January transfer window and beyond.
