Man Utd Urged to Sign Cole Palmer, Offload Zirkzee and

Manchester United have been advised to pursue Cole Palmer from Chelsea as part of a significant summer overhaul, according to former England international Chris Waddle. The Red Devils secured Champions League qualification under Michael Carrick in the second half of the 2024-25 season, but significant changes are needed to compete across multiple competitions next term.

Waddle believes United must offload several high-profile forwards to fund an ambitious transfer window. Joshua Zirkzee, signed for approximately £36.5 million, and Rasmus Hojlund, who is set to join Napoli permanently for around £38 million, are both candidates for departure. The departures would free up substantial wages and transfer funds that Carrick could reinvest in quality acquisitions.

Palmer Transfer Possibility

Palmer has emerged as a specific target, with reports suggesting the Chelsea winger "could be tempted" by a move to Old Trafford. Waddle believes the 22-year-old possesses the technical qualities to flourish under Carrick's possession-based approach. "If that frees up the money to go and get people like Cole Palmer and get them really working on the ball and doing what we know they can do in possession then he could become a great player again," Waddle told BoyleSports.

Beyond individual signings, Waddle highlighted that five or six additional players must leave to reduce the wage bill significantly. Casemiro, the veteran midfielder, is already expected to depart. The influx of capital from these exits would enable Carrick to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cups simultaneously.

Carrick's Challenge Ahead

While Waddle praised Carrick's restoration of team cohesion and work-rate, he expressed concerns about the squad's maturity and control. "My one concern about Manchester United is that I don't think he has got the players and needs to make some acquisitions this summer," Waddle explained. The former Sunderland winger noted that United rarely appear in command during matches, suggesting tactical reinforcements are essential for sustained success across a demanding fixture list.

United's pathway to the top four again depends on strategic investment and squad evolution this summer. Palmer's arrival, coupled with departures of underperforming forwards, could signal a fresh era under Carrick's leadership.
